Manager Community and Cultural Development Nick Guggisberg said the award, announced in Sydney overnight as part of the Local Government NSW Awards, was great recognition for everyone involved in Intergen Munchout.
“From day one we have had such a positive response to this program from the participant’s as well as our chef and volunteer helpers,” Mr Guggisberg said.
Intergen Munchout is an eight-week program delivered each school term throughout 2017 involving nutritional and cooking activities, providing younger & older people the knowledge and skills to manage their fitness and nutrition while connecting the generations.
The program is funded by the NSW Government’s Youth Opportunities Program.
The program involves older residents alongside the youngsters, to work on the positive social aspects of cooking and sharing food.
The program starts with the basics of why a healthy lifestyle is important and how to cook a meal using a recipe, as well as food safety and kitchen hazards.
It then moves on to food psychology, the importance of fats, protein and carbs for everyday living, food alternatives for allergies and diet variations.
It also covers understanding and creating meal plans for all body types, the ups and downs of fast food, and the difference between whole food and processed food.
“When we celebrated the end of the first Intergen program at Easter, we had more than 40 people packed into the courtyard at the SENTRAL cottages in Hindmarsh Park.”
“It was great to have so many people turn up and share a meal, especially as there was an 50/50 split between young and older people.”
Mayor Mark Honey has paid tribute to the SENTRAL team.
“Intergen Munchout is a simple but powerful way to help achieve a healthy, safe and inclusive community,” Cr Honey said.
“I’d like to thank coordinator Dylan Powell and his colleagues, Chef Michelle Townsend, and the older residents whose participation was invaluable.”
SENTRAL Youth Services is holding a Munchout on Saturday, August 5 as part of the launch of the refurbished Youth Services Centre in Hindmarsh Park.
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward also congratulated SENTRAL Youth Services on taking out this prestigious award.
“I look to attending the Munchout on Saturday in Hindmarsh Park. It will be a milestone event for the youth of Kiama and on display will be some of the innovative, inspiring and entertaining examples of youth culture, through a range of entertainment, exhibitions and locally sourced foods and coffee,” Mr Ward said.
“Congratulations to Dylan Powell and his colleagues for receiving this much deserved Award as recognition for their hard work and dedication with Intergen Munchout.”
This is the second consecutive year Kiama Council has received the Heart Foundation Local Government Award.
