The term of office for a mayor or deputy mayor elected by councillors is two years, in accordance with legislation.
Cr Mark Honey (mayor) and Cr Kathy Rice (deputy mayor) were elected into their roles in 2016, by way of a secret ballot based on preferential voting among councillors.
This year, councillors moved to vote for the roles using the open voting method or show of hands.
The role of mayor received only one nomination from Cr Honey, while the deputy mayor’s role received two nominations in Cr Sloan and Cr Warren Steel.
Cr Sloan won the seat five formal votes to four.
Cr Sloan: 5 (Cr Mark Westhoff, Cr Mark Way, Cr Kathy Rice, Cr Sloan and Cr Mark Honey)
Cr Steel: 4 (Cr Matt Brown, Cr Steel, Cr Don Watson and Cr Neil Reilly)
Cr Rice confirmed she would not be re-contesting the role of deputy mayor prior to the council meeting on Monday.
