Local artist Kim Irwin will launch her first solo exhibition on Thursday, February 1 at the Little Blowhole Art Bar.

Irwin’s exhibition represents a body of work created between 2013 and 2017 while she was completing a degree, and after discovering basic digital paint apps.

It is, quite literally, the things she drew to get out of her head in her downtime.

"Doing a degree meant that I had no space or energy for art, and in fact I felt that all my creativity was absorbed into essay writing,” Irwin said.

“When I first discovered the painting app I was dismissive, but very quickly became engrossed as I tried to make the program (and my finger) work in the same way that a pen or a brush might work.”

Irwin said she deleted more strokes than she kept due to the limitations of the medium, but persisted and was able to create work she was happy with.

“Working this way had a great benefit for me, in that I could not be as perfect or precise as I was used to being,” she said.

“In freeing-up these expectations of myself, I have grown immeasurably as an artist. What started as a distraction has become a firm interest, and I will continue to include this medium in my art.

“These works are not meant to be perfect. They make no effort to hide the fact that they are digitally created. They reflect a letting go, and a light-heartedness that is new to me. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.”

Guests need not RSVP, just come along on the night from 5.30pm. Buffet dinner will be served at the bar from 7pm, at a cost of $25 per person.
