In 2006, an award was established to acknowledge a member of council staff who has contributed in a significant way to the betterment of the community in a voluntary capacity.
The award was established in memory of the late councillor Robert East, who had an outstanding and proud record of community service.
Carole has been an active member of Rotary for many years and regularly participates in fundraising events, training, publicity, marketing as well as offering support to various events and community projects.
“I was very surprised and overwhelmed to say the least,” she said.
“There’s so many people in the community who do so much more than I do, I pale in significance.”
Carole recently assisted with the Kiama Car and Bike Spectacular, which raises money for melanoma, she regularly looks after the barbecues to raise money for local groups SCARF, Kiama Scouts, Dementia Friendly Kiama and Homestead of Hope, plus many more.
She has also taken part in humanitarian projects in Vanuatu, Thailand and Papua New Guinea, where she volunteered at a school for the disabled.
“It’s so hard to explain the feeling of being able to give back, I have a real love for the international side of things, although it’s wonderful working with local kids here, but it’s just about being able to give back to someone less fortunate than myself,” she said.
“We are very blessed to have been born into a first world country, and we take for granted so many things, even if I’m able to help just one person, it makes such a big difference.”
Along with the award, Mrs Johnston received $500, which she intends to donate back to the community.
