Cr Honey said the Giving Tree was a great way to provide gifts for children who might otherwise go without this Christmas.
“Even in what seem to be prosperous places such as Kiama, Gerringong and Jamberoo there are families going through difficult times, and that includes children,” he said.
“I am always talking about the strong community spirit we have in our municipality, but Christmas is the time when we really need that community spirit to shine.
“It’s not about religion or commercialism, it’s about making sure even those families who are struggling, can still participate in the festivities at this time of year.
“Last year I was blown away by how people responded. We had to organise a truck to deliver all the gifts to the charities.”
Gifts can be left under the Giving Trees in the foyer of the Council Chambers or at Kiama Library until Friday, December 8.
The gifts will then be collected and distributed by local charities. There is no need to wrap your gifts, as they need to be sorted before being distributed.
Gifts are needed for the age groups 0 – 14 years, especially the 10 – 14 years’ age group.
