His affinity for the ocean inspired an innovation that landed him a lucrative deal in the Shark Tank finale aired on Tuesday night.
Red Balloon founder Naomi Simson offered $100,000 for a 50 per cent share in his product, Ecto Hand Planes – a bodysurfing hand plane that’s made from recycled surfboards.
“My dad’s always surfed, he introduced me to the ocean and waves,” Chris said.
“Like any child, the waves were a bit scary, but once I learnt more about the currents, it became home.
“Growing up in Minnamurra, it was great to have so many great spots to explore, different wave types to enjoy.”
His upbringing on the coast influenced the eco-friendly design.
“I respect the environment and the ocean,” Chris said.
“It’s a powerful force, it’s worth protecting, it’s so beautiful.
“We all need things, we have to consume to exist.
“I’ve had a fantastic upbringing, and so it’s good to do something where I can minimise the impact on the environment.”
Chris grew up surfing, but these days you’re more likely to catch him bodysurfing.
“Once I started bodysurfing I didn’t look back,” he said.
“But it’s not about surfing or bodysurfing, it’s about enjoying the conditions whatever you do.”
The reality TV experience was daunting for Chris.
“It was definitely a huge leap to go on the show,” he said.
“To be part of a season finale was exciting, it was really terrifying to see the final edit.
“No one goes on Shark Tank not to get roasted, it’s definitely a platform where you’ll get the harder questions.”
It was definitely worthwhile.
“It’s really exciting there was a match there,” he said.
“To get a deal was just awesome.”
The handplanes are sold at a long list of independent surf stores in Australia and on the online gifting platform Wrapped by Red Balloon,
David Jones is also on board – upping their distribution from 10 stores to 24 since the episode was filmed at the end of last year.
