Would Dwayne Connors (Jets) or Matt O’Brien (Knights) be happy with the end result of this Group 7 rugby league match played on Saturday at the Nowra Showground?
Well the answer would be no they would not.
Sure O’Brien would be happy to pocket the two points but he and his charges would be thinking “we should had won by more”.
The Knights held a 16-nil lead over the home side at the break and in the second half Kiama seemed to ease up.
A Knight’s official was heard to say “we have lost our groove” when Kiama had dropped down a gear.
The Knights in the first half could do no wrong and produced a hear perfect first 40 minutes.
The Jets, on the other hand, in the first half were far from perfect.
Now what can Connors take from this match?
The Jet’s mentor would have to be happy with the fight his team showed in the second half.
The Jets did push the Knights hard all the way in the second term and if a few more passes stuck the home side could had gone close to beating the Knights.
Connors should also be happy with his own form and may think about starting the match next week rather than coming off the bench.
The Jets mentor got stuck into the Knights physically and he also showed skill to set up his team’s only try of the match.
Midway in the second half the Jets were looking good and starting to get on top but just could not do any damage on the scoreboard.
Connors decided a chip over the top was the go and his deft kick, which he regathered, led to Mark Brandon scoring outwide.
This made the score 18-6 and then the Jets made the cardinal rugby league sin of not getting to your kick once you put points on the board which pretty much summed up their day.
Another concerning thing for the Jets was that Kiama second rower, Kieran Poole, scored two tries, including the first one of the match, outwide and virtually on the same blade of grass.
Looks like the Jets will be doing some defensive drills at training this week.
All is not gloom and doom for the Jets with many of its players are close to hitting their best form.
Youngsters Zac Blattner and Tyson Simpson are playing with great maturity, while the bruise brothers Zac Kershaw and Ben Lahene made heaps of block-busting runs.
Jets fullback/winger Steve Brandon made many strong runs from dummy half and his frustration, at not being allowed to get a quick play-the-ball, was noticeable.
Centre Matt Cornell had a great game for the Knights, five-eighth Blake Rickard was all class, prop Cam Whittaker did a heaps of work and Poole was close to being the best player on the field.
In another blow to the Jets, fleet-of-foot back Issac Mumberson was taken from the field just before half-time with an elbow injury - we hope it’s not serious.
