The first round of the Black and Blue Trophy will be hotly contested at Kiama Showground and will be a real talking point as former players take the opportunity to reminisce about the virtues of rucking and no lifting in the lineouts.

However, the celebrations will not stop there. 

According to Kiama Sevens tournament director and second-grade coach Mark Bryant, this year’s event also coincides with the 20th anniversary of Vikings first-grade coach Sean Barrett’s only tackle he made in his career as a player with the Kiama Rugby Club.

Barrett reportedly made the tackle against Weerona Wombats at the official opening of the Kiama Rugby Club house in 1997.

“Back to Kiama is an annual event we hold to try and get all the retired players or those who haven’t had anything to do with the club for a while back together,” Mr Bryant said.

“We are also trying to build up some interest and momentum for the 60^th anniversary of Kiama Rugby Club in 2020.

“This Saturday will be a fantastic opportunity to come down to the club watch some rugby, have a cold beer with mates and reminisce.”

Mr Bryant said it was traditional to hold the ‘Back to Kiama’ event at the game against Wollongong Vikings.

“They have been long-time opponents and their club has been around for a long time as well,” he said.

“They will celebrate their 60^th anniversary next month.

“It’s going to be a tough tussle, the Vikings are up the top of the ladder and we are mid-table, its always a good game.”

In a little more than a month following the ‘Back to Kiama’ Kiama Rugby Club will also be holding their annual ‘Ladies Day’ on Saturday, July 1.

Tickets are $60 per person and includes entry into the marquee, wine, champagne and food.

Included in the day’s entertainment will be auctions and raffles, all profits raised on the day will be donated towards breast cancer research and treatment.
