Kiama council has organised an OK Organics Kiama Compost Giveaway as part of International Compost Awareness Week (May 7-13).
Mayor Mark Honey said council was giving away 3000 bags of compost made from its OK Organics Kiama initiative.
“Kiama residents have done a great job getting behind OK Organics Kiama, using their green lid bins and ensuring we have our food scraps and other organic waste going to compost not landfill,” Cr Honey said.
“The OK Organics Kiama Compost Giveaway is a thank you to residents for making the new organics collection such a huge success.”
Key outcomes from the OK Organics Kiama initiative:
*76 per cent of all waste collected by Kiama council is being composted or recycled (compared to 56 per cent prior to OK Organics Kiama).
*In 2015/16 there were 6049 tonnes of waste recovered (recycled or composted), an increase of 1839 tonnes.
*The amount of waste going to landfill has dropped to 24 per cent, compared to 44 per cent prior to OK Organics Kiama.
Residents living in waste collection zones 1 to 10 can collect two 25-litre bags of certified AS4454 compost per household, until stocks run out.
All organics material collected in the green lid bins is taken to SoilCo in Kembla Grange for processing into compost.
The compost is ideal for use as a soil conditioner.
The bags of compost can be collected from the Community Recycling Centre in Minnamurra during Compost Awareness Week, between 8am and 12noon on Saturday, May 6 and Saturday, May 13.
Residents in odd-numbered waste collection zones (1,3,5,7,9) can collect their compost on Saturday, May 6, and residents in even-numbered zones (2,4,6,8,10) on Saturday, May 13.
Residents do not need to book but must produce proof of residency such as a drivers licence or rates notice when collecting their compost.
