As the crowd prepared to shout the phrase "nice, Garry" on the third ball of Lyon's first over, the off-spinner instead sent them into ecstasy by dismissing Pakistan opener Sami Aslam.
There had been a campaign started on social media to set a world record for the most people to yell "Niiice Garryyyy", the phrase made famous by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.
More than 12,000 fans had signed up to the event posted on Facebook though few expected the bizarre twist to the social media stunt.
Fans took to Twitter to honour Lyon, who started trending on Twitter along with the hash tag #NiceGarry.
