Kiama Heights artist Jenny Asquith has created oil paintings that seek to capture the sensation of flying that can be enjoyed while swimming.
It will open from December 2-4 (9am-6pm); and December 5-7 (2pm-6pm) at the Old Fire Station gallery, Kiama.
There will be live music on Friday, December 2 from 6pm-8pm.
Asquith said there was a deliberate ambiguity in the images that prompts the viewer’s own interpretation.
For instance; are the figures mermaids or angels? Is that sky or water? Rocks or bubbles?
Water is often used in her artwork as a metaphor; exploring the visual possibilities of reflection, translucency, depth, distortion, risk and sensuous flowing movement.
Traditional techniques in oil painting are used to create a range of contemporary imagery, including works of all sizes that may be bold or colourful, yet quietly contemplative.
In this exhibition, images of Australian birds (with character) continue the flying theme.
Of added interest is the pairing of some paintings with some old favourite poems and lyrics which are woven through the exhibition.
