This year the local Wollongong and Lake Local Area Commands – LACs - used the week to remember their colleagues and recognise the families of police officers whilst raising funds for Police Legacy and PCYC.
On Saturday at the start of the week, led by Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione, police officers, joined by fellow Emergency Services personnel from all of the other agencies from across the State, rode their motorbikes in the Police Remembrance Ride to the Memorial Wall in Canberra. Local officers participated.
Locally, this year’s Remembrance Celebrations began with the launch held at Collegians Club in Wollongong, on Thursday last for the families of Grahame Donnelly (2013), Nick Skomarow (2013), Ray Schuberg (1987), Col Stevenson (2014), Steve Tier (1985), all who have passed over the last 33 years from the Wollongong and Lake Illawarra Local Area Commands.
A special celebratory lunch was provided for the families with the Rotary Club of Wollongong the community partner for the annual event.
In addition, the local police organising committee, headed by Sgt Bob Minns, used this time to highlight their dedication to the community and to the Police Family.
A Family Fun Day followed just three days later, on the Sunday at the Collegians Oval at Figtree.
At this event a jumping castle and activities were provided for children, a raffle, BBQ/sausage sizzle by Rotary and the Police Association; coffee by the Police Bank, all working together to raise funds for Police Legacy and PCYC.
Police from both Local Area Commands got tough and serious in their cop-versus-cop activities.
Firstly, the Col Stevenson Tug of War was run by Senior Constable Darren Palk of PCYC Wollongong; then the Ray Schuberg Touch Football followed in his honour. Matches also paid tribute to Nick Skomarow and Steve Tier.
The match of the day was the Grahame Donnelly Cup with the Lake Lions convincingly defeated the Wollongong Falcons 32-4.
