The repairs, which council estimates will take between three and four weeks, will mean reduced access for pedestrians and cyclists.
The repairs include rebuilding the revetment along the beach before constructing the new footpath.
The final stage of repairs will involve re-turfing the damaged area and restoring the lighting and Wi-Fi access.
Kiama council's director of engineering and works, Gino Belsito said there was 80 metres of footpath that needed to be replaced, plus “quite a few tonnage of rock that we’re bringing in… obviously that’s going to help with any future event that may happen”.
“I think at the end of it, obviously it’s important to get all this back to normal.
“Right after the storm we went through the recovery phase, so we did all the clean-up.
“It’s been open since shortly after the storm to pedestrians, we’ve now got to close it off obviously during the construction… But the end result is going to be that it will probably be as good as, if not better than what was already here.”
