This year Damien Leith celebrates a decade in the Australian music industry, following his Australian Idol win. To celebrate this milestone he will be hitting the road with his band to perform across Australia.
He is one of the idol winners who has managed to translate his win into a full-time career.
“For the first two years after I won I didn’t have a plan and it quickly became clear that that wouldn’t work. My wife and I sat down and made specific plans and goals. I’m working all the time – you have to work on what you want to do,” Damien said.
“I do feel very lucky, compared to my life and job pre-performing, I get to see the kids more and spend time with the family.
He literally grew up with music. “My mum is a beautiful singer and my dad is a great guitar player and sings as well. We traveled all over the world for my dad’s work and often to really remote areas.
“When we stayed in places with no TV, Mum and Dad would keep us entertained by performing songs,” he said.
One thing is for certain, I wouldn’t be doing what I am today without all the amazing support from fans over the years.Damien Leith
Obviously some of that talent rubbed off and he wowed audiences in 2006 on the Idol stage with his breathtaking performances of songs such as Hallelujah, Unchained Melody and Message To My Girl.
“It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since I first stepped onto the Australian Idol stage,” he said.
“One thing is for certain, I wouldn’t be doing what I am today without all the amazing support from fans over the years.
The Winner’s Journey – 10th Anniversary Tour concert at the Milton Theatre on September 23 will not only include a look back at the music throughout his career, but will also feature some rare songs and a lot of untold stories that have brought him from 2006 up to today.
“We played at Milton Theatre last year with the band and it was just so special. It has such a fantastic vibe, and it’s the vibe of the concert that makes it,” he said.
Tickets are $44 and available online or phone 4455 3056.
His advice for those wanting a start in the industry is to keep on working every day. “Get up on stage, write songs and perform as much as you can because the more you do, the better you get.
