Kiama council’s Sorry Day events began with the Welcome to Country and flag raising at the old council chambers.
This was followed by a Reconciliation Walk to The Pavilion and a ceremony at the venue.
Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School students performed the national anthem in Dharawal.
Gerringong, Kiama and Jamberoo Public Schools, and the Doonooch Dancers also took part. Guest speaker was Glen Sutherland, Aboriginal community liaison officer at the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command.
The artwork displayed at the ceremony was created by the students of the ‘Dare to be Deadly’ group at Minnamurra Public School.
This is a cultural awareness program which aims to provide the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students of the school with cultural, academic and social workshops.
The artwork was designed and painted by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.
