Kate lives with her husband Laurence Wilson near the 11th district, home to bars and restaurants that were hit during the attacks.
The couple recently attended a hip-hop concert at the Bataclan concert hall and they frequent the cafe and club district.
“It's an area we often go to for drinks and shopping,” she said.
“It's usually a really lively area with lots of bars and lovely boutiques.”
Kate and Laurence were married in Milton last year and have lived in Paris for 18 months where is researching liver and breast cancer at the Institute Marie Curie.
At the time of the attacks they were at Beauvais airport waiting to fly to Rome for the weekend and heard news of the situation when they landed in Italy.
“Wednesday was a public holiday in France, so thankfully a lot of our friends and colleagues were away,” Kate said.
“One of my friends was on her way to a restaurant near the Bataclan when she heard the gun shots - she immediately jumped in a cab and made it home safely.”
It's hard to be so far away from family but it's especially difficult when you're scared.

Kate said the attacks were “horrifying” but would not prevent her from enjoying life in the city.
“I'm scared of what this will do to Paris but I'm not scared to live in Paris after the attacks, and I won't stop enjoying my life here,” she said.
“It's especially sad that this is the second time in 2015 that Paris has had to deal with terrorist attacks.
“When the attacks happened in January I thought about staying in for a few days, but a friend pointed out that if you do this the terrorists win, so I'm determined to continue living my life as normally as possible.”
Kate said she was quick to let her parents Rob and Andrea Douglass of Milton and friends know she was OK following the attacks.
“I've always loved Paris, so getting an opportunity to live and work there has been very exciting.
“It's fun living in a vibrant city, but I miss Australia and still call Milton home.”
Kate will join a peace march in Paris following the attacks on a concert hall, sports stadium and restaurants that have killed more than 130 people.
