Kiama’s Bjorn Myers had to fight hard to overcome Bowral’s Sam Donovan in Division 1
Perez was the first player from Georgia to reach the semi-finals in both the Women’s Singles and Doubles in over 20 years.
Perez was very pleased with her form, and will now attend to some recovery training in preparation for the $25,000 ITF event to be held in South Carolina next week.
Local players Massimo Fiorentini and Francesca Agazzi travelled to Wagga Wagga last week to compete in the 120th Riverina Open. Agazzi, a local coach, and Fiorentini, a leading player in Wollongong, enjoyed success in the singles events.
Both went down at the semi-final stage with Agazzi contesting a tight 6-3 7-5 loss to the eventual winner, and number 1 seed, Sarina Kang from the ACT.
Fifteen-year-old Renee McBryde from Fairy Meadow, continued her good form after her maiden ITF Junior win last week in Homebush. Playing in the ACT International she reached the semi-finals of the singles and the quarter-finals of the doubles.
This consistent form will help her junior world ranking when they are released by the ITF at the end of the month.
Finalists have been decided in both the Wednesday Ladies Comp and the Friday Redball Hotshots comp at Beaton Park. In the ladies comp, the team of Vanessa Dadeppo, Marjana Kovacevic and Sharon Wright will play Wendy Weeks, Judy Dion and Debby Lausz.
These teams finished the regular season in first and second so a close final is predicted. The Hotshots final will be played between ladder leaders Heath Barkley and Jake Petrovski, against Rakheja and Matthew Bixion-Reiken.
In the Tuesday Night Division 1 Comp Kiama’s Bjorn Myers had to fight hard to overcome Bowral’s Sam Donovan winning 6-4. Fred Newman had a solid 6-1 win over Wollongong’s Dave Rouse.
Klaus Webber was too good for David McIntosh with a 6-3 win. Michael Raynor pulled off the surprise of the round with a 6-3 win over Jamberoo’s Dave Dubois. And Ben Taylor won a marathon against Kanahooka’s Paul Mulligan 6-3.
From the Pros
Tennis enthusiasts often comment about why tennis is not what it was like in the old days. Whereby there is no one exact answer, the truth is that tennis is not being played by the family any more.
Gone are the days of the family picnic with a hit of tennis, or the school holiday tennis challenge between the parents and the kids. The fact is that tennis courts are empty a lot of the time, especially on Sundays. Why not get family and friends together for a hit of summer tennis before you head to the beach.
