The Eyestore in Kiama Village have partnered with Kiama Lions Club to call on all residents to join them in the fight for global eyesight by donating old prescription glasses for people in need.
The Lions Recycle for Sight Program is one of many initiatives of the Kiama Lions Club that aims to improve vision throughout the world.
Through this program, residents can donate old prescription glasses (adult and child), or prescription sunglasses that will be sorted by strength and distributed to people living in developing countries.
Frame buyer for Kiama’s Eyestore Jenny Miles said everyone deserves access to eye care.
“It’s as simple as getting out that old pair of glasses that has been sitting in a drawer at home and dropping them in,” Ms Miles said.
“We want to create that community feel where we all can do something for the cause.
‘‘We can create that here and Kiama is such a generous community.”
Ms Miles said that since Eyestore initially posted on Facebook in August informing residents about the program, they have received almost 500 frames of all different types.
“They don’t need to be fashionable, just functional,’’ she said.
Kiama Lions Club member Phyl Willetts said this was the first year the club had run this program.
“The Lions Clubs are involved in various programs to help sight for people in third world countries and this is just another initiative we are behind,” she said.
Residents can also drop off their old frames to Kiama Golf Club, which has a box collection point, or otherwise drop them in at the store.
