ORIGINAL STORY: POLICE investigations are ongoing, following the discovery of an alleged clandestine drug laboratory in Kiama.
Speaking to the Kiama Independent on Thursday evening, Lake Illawarra Local Area Command Inspector Andrew Koutsoufis said police had allegedly identified a clandestine laboratory in Taylor Street, which was being examined by members of police's chemical operations unit.
Inspector Koutsoufis said police had located an amount of what they believed to be methamphetamine.
They also located a Ruger Mini-14, a prohibited semi-automatic weapon.
He said the examination would continue on Friday.
“We believe there's been quite a substantial amount of drugs been located on these premises,” Inspector Koutsoufis said.
Police arrived at the set of four units about 4pm on Thursday.
A Hazmat unit and fire-fighters also attended the scene.
“It's a clandestine laboratory, a lot of chemicals have been located, so we need to make sure that it's safe for everyone here,” Inspector Koutsoufis said.
Inspector Koutsoufis said such a discovery wasn't a common occurrence in Kiama.
“But it goes to show how bad ice is at the moment,” he said.
A 55-year-old male was arrested on Wednesday evening, and has already been charged with a number of drug-related offences.
