The stadium will host a six-week basketball skills development program aimed at year 3 to year 6 students, tipping off on August 14 and 15.
It costs $15.
This will be followed by a September school holiday program and a teams/club competition from October 16.
Illawarra Sports Stadium secretary Ian Richardson is keen to see junior basketball played again on the stadium's four courts after a three-year absence.
At its peak in the mid-1990s, 96 junior teams and 46 games a week packed the courts.
"It was full, chockablock but there was a waning of interest in basketball in the early 2000s," Mr Richardson said.
"Membership dropped down to about 1200 from 2300-plus ... by 2012 there was no need for the two extra courts here."
Junior basketball continued at the Snakepit, Beaton Park only.
Its absence at Berkeley left a financial black hole for the stadium, with only netball, the canteen and other events bringing in money.
"These courts are so much underutilised on the basketball side, it makes sense to try and re-establish it," Mr Richardson said.
He hopes lots of children will embrace basketball and take part in the skills program and competition at the stadium on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
He has sent letters to all southern Wollongong schools to drum up interest.
"We're hoping for 80 to register, might only get 10 children, we might get 200, we just don't know.
Mr Richardson said in basketball, unlike soccer and netball, everyone in the team can shoot and score.
Registration will be at the stadium on Friday, August 7, from 4.30pm-6pm and Saturday, August 8, 8am-9.30am.
