Amy Schumer might be the darling of the comedy world, with the cinematic release of Trainwreck and a swag of Emmy nominations for her television series Inside Amy Schumer, but it seems Star Wars fans do not share her sense of humour.

Fans of the science fiction movie franchise have expressed outrage on social media about Schumer's photo shoot for the U.S. edition of GQ magazine, which they claim sexualises their beloved characters.

The cover of GQ features Schumer sucking the finger of C-3PO in a suggestive pose.

Inside the magazine, she is pictured in bed undressed with C-3PO and R2-D2, in the back of a cab with Chewbacca, C-3PO and Yoda and in what appears to be a gay bar.

The official Twitter account of Star Wars distanced itself from the photo shoot.

"Lucasfilm & Disney didn't approve, participate in or condone the inappropriate use of our characters in this manner," said a post on the Star Wars Twitter feed.

But others have expressed support for the comedian whose cinematic star vehicle Trainwreck, directed by Judd Apatow, is predicted to be a box office success on its opening weekend in the United States.

Schumer will perform a one-off live show in Melbourne on July 22, while on a promotional tour for Trainwreck, in which she plays a woman whose "emotionally sloppy" love life takes a detour when she meets a charming doctor, played by Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader.

Schumer has been applauded for the topics she tackles in her television series and stand-up routines, including sex, relationships and attitudes toward women.

However, she has been accused of delving "into racial territory tactlessly" and having a thin-skin in reaction to criticism.

"For such a keen observer of social norms and an effective satirist of the ways gender is complicated by them, Schumer has a shockingly large blind spot around race," Monica Heisey wrote in The Guardian.

Schumer quickly defended herself on social media, claiming she was not racist, but defended her right to joke as she pleased.

"You can call it a 'blind spot for racism' or 'lazy' but you are wrong. It is a joke and it is funny. I know that because people laugh at it. Even if you personally did not," Schumer wrote on Twitter. "I ask you to resist the urge to pick me apart. Trust me. I am not racist. I am a devout feminist and lover of all people."

Amy Schumer will perform at Hamer Hall in Melbourne on July 22. Trainwreck opens on August 6.
