Kiama were missing first team regulars Dean Land, Chris Hill and Chris Christodoulou but produced a disciplined and dogged display against the third-placed Thunder.
Coach James Spence was pleased with aspects of his side's performance in their 3-2 loss away to Helensburgh the previous weekend and implored his side to maintain its defensive shape against Thirroul.
Kiama had chances in the first half through Daniel Swinton and Jason Forrester but couldn't find their way past Thirroul custodian Josh Williams.
Kiama largely nullified the threat of Thirroul's big and mobile forwards in the second half and looked dangerous on the counter attack.
There were nervy moments near the end of the match but Kiama defenders Daniel Gillespie, Jay Reid, Isaac Coonerty and Brendan Apperley were resolute and goalkeeper Dean Beichert made a stunning save just before the final whistle.
Earlier in the day, Neil Spence's youth grade side lost 4-1, with Ben Reid scoring Kiama's goal.
Glenn Fisher's reserve grade side were beaten 2-0.
Kiama played University at Kooloobong Oval on Sunday and the first grade side were humbled 6-1, with Daniel Swinton scoring the solitary goal for the visitors.
The reserves, however, played a splendid match and won 5-3, courtesy of goals to Mitch O'Neill, Michael Wilson (2), Jye Marks and Jay Horobin.
The youth grade side lost 2-0.
Kiama play Coniston away on Saturday and Corrimal at home on Sunday in another double-header.
