In celebration of World Environment Day, Kiama council will host a series of sustainability workshops throughout June.
Residents of the municipality are invited to book into workshops on native bees, keeping chooks, solar power and LED lighting, home composting, and edible garden design.
Apart from ‘Keeping Chooks’ and ‘Edible Garden Design’, which cost $10 each per person, all workshops are free.
The solar power and LED lighting workshop will take place at Joyce Wheatley Community Centre in Hindmarsh Park.
All other workshops will be at Kiama’s Community Garden, Havilah Place, behind Blue Haven Village.
The two home composting workshops, on June 10 and 20, are the first of 20 composting workshops that council will offer during the next two years.
Future dates will be listed in late June on new waste and recycling calendars, and on the council’s website.
The composting workshops are supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded from the waste levy.
‘‘Our home-composting workshops are a chance for residents to discover which of our three home composting options are best suited to their household,’’ council waste management officer Josephine St John said.
‘‘We’ll show participants what it’s like to compost with a worm farm, regular compost bin, and the Bokashi One system – an eco-friendly system designed to be used indoors.’’
Each household taking part would receive its choice of a worm farm, compost bin, or Bokashi One system for free, she said.
‘‘Whether you live in an apartment, an urban household, or on a rural property, we’ll equip you with the tools you need to successfully turn your food waste into nutrient-rich fertiliser.’’ Workshop times are:
■Native bees: 10-11.30am Saturday, June 20;
■Keeping chooks: 9am-2.30pm Saturday, June 13;
■Solar power and LED lighting: 3-5.30pm Saturday, June 13;
■Home composting: 9-11am Wednesday, June 10, and Saturday, June 20;
■Edible garden design: noon-4pm, Saturday, June 27.
