On the weekend of May 2-3, Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park Rail will come alive with aviation activity for the annual air show.
This year the event is expected to attract more than 11,000 visitors and generate an estimated $1.7 million in visitor expenditure.
Launching the show on Wednesday, was NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major events Stuart Ayers, who labelled the event “the best air show in NSW”.
“Wings Over Illawarra offers breath-taking flying displays and a great program of on-ground entertainment,” Mr Ayres said.
“The state government, through tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, is proud to have secured Wings Over Illawarra for 2015.
“It is important that Destination NSW doesn’t just focus on Sydney but gets out into regional areas.”
At the launch, event strategic partner Paul Bennet gave onlookers a taste of what was to come in this year’s show with a high-level aerobatics display in his Wolf Pitts Pro.
Event co-ordinator Mark Bright said it was shaping up to be the event’s greatest year yet, with “the best” fly program and display they had ever amassed.
“We draw the best Australian aircraft from around the country,” he said.
“We have been overwhelmed with support from the Australian Defence Force, which have also tasked 17 aircraft to attend.”
The Royal Australian Air Force, Navy’s Fleet Air Arm and the Australian Army’s aviation regiment will also entertain crowds at the show.
This expanded military commitment is matched by an impressive line-up of civilian aircraft and pilots, including Australia’s best air show display pilots and most popular warbirds.
“The flying program will be better than any previous Wings Over Illawarra, with solo displays by Paul Bennet and Red Bull Air Race competitor Matt Hall, ” Mr Bright said.
“With a diverse array of on-ground displays including Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s recently-arrived retired Qantas Boeing 747, Wings Over Illawarra 2015 offers something for everyone”
