THE Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned people across the Illawarra and South Coast to prepare for the possibility of damaging winds through this afternoon and evening.

The BOM issued a severe weather warning at 1.30pm this afternoon advising people that northwesterly winds of 60 kilometres per hour and gusting up to 90 kilometres have been forecast for the area ahead of a southerly change.
The State Emergency Service recommends that people; move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony and keep clear of fallen power lines.

A marine gale wind warning, issued by the BOM earlier this morning, is still current for the Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.
The BOM will issue an update at 5pm EDT Monday.
