A workshop and guided walk along the foreshore of Lake Illawarra has been organised as part of National Bird Week on October 20-26.
Residents can contribute to the first Aussie Backyard Bird Count.
Bird watching expert Martin Potter will provide a presentation involving photographs of local birds and recordings of bird sounds, before everyone is armed with binoculars.
On previous walks, participants have spotted more than 20 kinds of birds including black swans, caspian terns and spotted pardalotes.
Data from the walk will be collected and submitted as part of the inaugural Aussie Backyard Bird Count, organised by BirdLife Australia, and contribute to scientific knowledge about local birdlife.
The free event will take place on Sunday, October 26, 9.30am-12.30pm and is open to all Shellharbour residents over the age of 10.
Children will need to be accompanied by an adult.
Places are limited, so bookings are essential; email sustainability@shellharbour. nsw.gov.au or call 4221 6111.
