Taekidokai in Albion Park Rail will hold its final fundraiser for the year this Sunday, October 19 with all proceeds going to the Camp Quality Convoy.
The centre has been running in the Illawarra for 25 years and there are eight Taekidokai centres from Helensburgh to Gerringong. Taekidokai is an Australia form of Martial Arts that combines Taekwondo, Karate and Aikido and is suitable for men, women, and children starting from the age of four. The centres teach the art of Taekidokai from junior grade level up to black belts.
Chief Instructor Jennifer Day said supporting the community was something the club value and they strongly believe in giving back to the community.
“Our goal is to raise $20,000 this year. We have held various fundraising events for the convoy since February this year,” she said.
“We hold a fundraiser every year, for the last four years we have raised money for the KidzWish Foundation and we decided to fundraise for convoy this year because we hadn’t fundraised for them before and to help them celebrate their 10 year anniversary.”
In true Camp Quality spirit, Ms Day will shave her head at the end of the event activities.
“I’m shaving my head for the kids with cancer who don’t have the choice,” she said.
“10 of the Taekidokai students will be selected over the next couple of weeks to cut off part of my hair and then I will fully shave my head.”
Participants will enjoy eight hours of training with Sensei Rodney Day starting from 6am with a stretch class, then various training sessions and a head shave at 2.30pm.
A barbecue will run all day long as well as stalls, face painting, sumo wrestling, tattoos for the kids, Jack the Juggler and live music from Henri Richards-Palk’s band, Rose amongst Thorns.
Spots are also available for registrations and anyone who registers in October gets a free uniform.
The centre is located at 2/43 Durgadin Drive Albion Park and day kicks off at 6am.
