The section received one-third of all Illawarra votes in the National Roads and Motorists’ Association’s Seeing Red on Roads campaign..
The Princes Highway has been voted the worst section of road on the South Coast according to the NRMA.
Congestion, not enough lanes and too many lights were cited as the biggest problems on the Albion Park Rail stretch of the highway.
NRMA local Director Alan Evans said nearly 12,000 motorists took the time to vote for the Princes Highway as a whole.
NRMA local Director Michael Tynan was not surprised at the huge vote for the Albion Park Rail section of the Princes Highway, noting it was a tale of two stories for the Highway.
“The section of Highway leading south to Albion Park Rail has been at least three lanes either way for years now, while the section after Albion Park Rail was recently upgraded to dual carriageway, providing a safe and mostly congestion-free run to Nowra,” Mr Tynan said.
“The big problem is the section from the Illawarra Highway roundabout to Albion Park Rail station, which is slow, contains several sets of traffic lights and is in desperate need of upgrade to ensure continuity of speed and safety on the Princes Highway.”
Mr Tynan said it was pleasing Picton Road was ranked further down the list this year after being consistently one of the worst in the region.
“It goes to show that investing in roads saves lives and reduces travel times,” Mr Tynan said.
“I am pleased the NSW Government listened to the NRMA a few years back when we lobbied for upgrades on a road that made too many headlines for the number of lives lost on the road.
“I would like to personally thank all motorists who voted in this year’s survey. We will use the data to lobby both sides of politics in the lead up to the 2014 State Election and hopefully upgrades to the Albion Park Rail section of the Princes Highway are made sooner rather than later.”
