As of Monday, council lifeguards will patrol Kiama’s main beach from 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday.

Patrols will extend to 5pm during daylight saving, and 6pm during the summer school holidays.

Earlier this month, supervising lifeguard Andy Mole managed the recruitment of council’s 2014-15 season lifeguards.

“We’ve hired 30 lifeguards for the season,” he said.

“This year we have five women and 25 men making up our professional team.”

Three of council’s experienced lifeguards have already completed their induction to begin patrols at Surf Beach.

Mr Mole said the rest of the lifeguards will complete training and induction in December in time for the opening of the area’s six other patrolled beaches.

Outside of beach season, Mr Mole was involved in organising council’s purchase and the logistical rollout of defibrillators within the municipality.

“Council now owns 14 defibrillators that are strategically located at various council buildings for use by staff specially trained in resuscitation.

“Help our lifeguards to make sure we all have our safest, most enjoyable beach season yet.

“Swim between the flags and listen to lifeguards advice.”
