John Gasovski, from Arncliffe in southern Sydney, was found by a park ranger at 8.45am on Sunday, June 15, at Jamberoo Mountain Road in the Budderoo National Park.
Police said Mr Gasovski died from head injuries.
Mr Gasovski was reported missing on Thursday, June 12, by his family.
His last contact with his family was on Monday, June 9 at 3.30pm when he left for a business trip to Canberra and said he would be back the following evening (June 10).
The matter is being treated as suspicious.
Lake Illawarra LAC Superintendent Wayne Starling said a post mortem examination was under way, but that the investigation was still in its early stages.
Superintendent Starling said a search of the scene had found no trace of a weapon and that no attempt was made to conceal the body.
Police have requested CCTV footage from businesses in the Jamberoo area.
They contacted businesses on Sunday and were looking for footage from Monday until Sunday morning.
Jamberoo Pub, Nerilee Antiques and Fredericks IGA are assisting police.
Fredericks IGA owner Trevor Fredericks said they had received a request from police to supply their CCTV footage of the street.
"They didn't say what it was in relation to," he said.
"We have limited outside cameras, but will give them whatever we have."
Police could not confirm how Mr Gasovski got to Jamberoo or where his vehicle was.
