Police said the south bound Honda Jazz was being driven by the man’s 17 year old daughter when it skidded, rotated clockwise and drifted onto the north bound side of the road about 4.20pm.
Lake Illawarra Inspector Steve Worthington said a north bound vehicle then collided with the passenger side of the Honda.
“As a result a severe impact has occurred with the front of that vehicle,” he said.
“Both occupants of the north bound vehicle were able to exit their vehicle while both occupants of the Honda were trapped and injured.”
Emergency services managed to free both the man and his daughter, however the man was later pronounced dead at Wollongong Hospital.
The 17 year old was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital in a stable condition.
The male driver of the other vehicle was also taken to hospital in a stable condition.
The Princes Highway was closed for several hours following the crash, and motorists encountered extensive traffic delays.
Insp Worthington said charges were unlikely at this stage, however investigations by the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit were continuing.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
