Last Friday, Gabrielle hosted a special workshop at Killalea State Park as part of her HSC Aboriginal Studies course, which was attended by Aboriginal leaders and friends. The event is worth 40 per cent of her year 12 mark.
"I was always interested in art - things like performance and music - and when it came to my HSC studies I looked online for something different and contacted local Aboriginal elder Jodi Edwards.
"She has helped me enormously. I am now part of the Together Dreaming program and as part of that I am doing traditional basket weaving.
"My written component will be on 'What traditions of Aboriginal society are still around today?' - the Aboriginal culture is a really old culture and one that people should be aware of."
Elder Jodi Edwards said the number of young people studying her culture was very encouraging.
"Young people like Gabrielle are very much the future of our culture," Ms Edwards said.
Gabrielle won a football scholarship in the US through National Scouting Report Australia, and is excited about being able to study more indigenous cultures, particularly the American Indians.
