They'll enjoy a week off in week one of the finals before advancing directly to a grand-final qualifier in week two of the post-season.

They may well be joined by the Steelers Lisa Fiaola Cup side, who all but sealed a top-two finish of their own in Saturday's earlier clash at St Marys.

Illawarra finally broke their duck in the second stanza, which finished four tries to three in favour of the Bulldogs, but the 30-point dent in the Steelers for-and-against comes at the worst possible time.

It sees them hovering in sixth spot and needing to beat the 15th-placed Bears in the final round to secure a finals berth.

It was an equally unhappy day for Illawarra in the Harold Matthews Cup, with the Steelers going down 52-6 to the Bulldogs.

All four Steelers grades will be in action at Collegians in the final round of the regular season this Saturday.
