Spurs manager Jose Mourinho made 10 changes to the side that beat Sheffield United 3-1 in their last game but it was still a strong line-up.

Welshman Gareth Bale started for the first time since December 23 and completed his first 90 minutes since returning on loan from Real Madrid.

Wycombe, who lost 4-3 to Tottenham in a fourth-round classic four years ago, stunned their visitors when Fred Onyedinma gave Wanderers, bottom of the second-tier Championship, the lead in the 25th minute.

And a shock was brewing on a freezing night at Adams Park on Monday night as the visitors were twice denied by the crossbar.

But Bale levelled with a clever finish just before the interval, for only his fourth goal since returning to the club, and Tottenham's second-half dominance eventually wore down a resilient Wycombe side.

"The attitude from the players from the first minute was excellent, then the players on the bench, they came with the intention of giving something to the team, so overall it was a good squad performance," a relieved Mourinho told BT Sport.

The Portuguese brought on big guns Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min after the interval and the visitors gained the ascendancy - but didn't find the net again until late on.

It looked like extra-time would be needed before a two-goal salvo in the space of 72 seconds put the contest to bed.

England midfielder Winks curled in a shot after 86 minutes and Ndombele fired home a minute later before the Frenchman added his second in added-time to make Tottenham's progress to the next round look easier than it was.

And there they will face Everton at Goodison Park, but next up on Thursday - Mourinho's men host Liverpool in the Premier League.

For Wycombe, their next Championship match takes them to fourth-placed Brentford on Sunday.

"The scoreline is probably not a reflection of the game although they were fantastic at the end - I am flattered they had to put some big names on to get in front," said Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth.

"We looked tired. We've given everything and there's no disgrace from our boys ... We'll take a lot of heart from this."
