Owing to the COVID-19 virus most of Kiama Lions Club (KLC) normal meetings and service activities have had to be curtailed until further notice. However we remain hopeful that we will be able to conduct our usual Driver Reviver (DR) activities around Anzac Day and Easter. Our DR site is at the Nungarry (Minnamurra River) Rest Area and is greatly appreciated by those heading south. NSW Roads and Maritime Services maintains the rest area and it is through it that KLC obtains tea, coffee and biscuits for free distribution at our caravan thanks to the generosity of Bushells and Arnotts. KLC does incur some costs in providing DR services and we are most appreciative of those travellers who make a donation while enjoying their travelling break with a biscuit and hot drink. We often have interesting conversations with those who stop for a break, but our main objective is to create an opportunity for those who partake of our DR services to stop for a while and potentially avoid the driver fatigue that might otherwise have occurred, thus l helping to reduce the risk of accidents as they further their journey.
KIAMA ROTARY CLUB
Even the most serious of world events can present us with an opportunity; it truly isn't all bad news.
We are simply being steered in a new direction and being afforded an opportunity to learn and change.
Now there is a scary word, "change" but before you reach for the "Valium" stop and think about your life experiences this far.
When was the last time you penned a letter to a friend?
Recall the pen and ink challenges we faced in a classroom, particularly if you had pigtails.
Along came the typewriter and the pin you needed to ensure the letter "p" had worked. How do you explain the joys of carbon paper, typex and correction tape to a grandchild?
We then ushered in the electronic era and life has not been the same since.
But we coped, and we'll do so again, not by wishing for the good old days but by grasping change with both hands and diving in.
So why the history discussion? It all has to do with the Rotary Club of Kiama cancelling our face-to-face meetings for the foreseeable future, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead of face-to-face we have accessed Google G-Suite and are in the process of unlocking the power of this software for our first on-line meeting
This has brought about some hilarious training sessions, but I can report we are confident that our first e-meeting will anoint us as "progressives" for years to come.
