BIG ACHIEVEMENT: Josephine St John and Sarah Hollingworth from Kiama Municipal Council's Environmental Services team.

Kiama Council won a Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Award for their Household Bulky Waste Drop Off initiative. Since 2014, the council has offered residents the opportunity to drop off their unwanted bulky household items, for free, at the Minnamurra Waste and Recycling Facility. In that time residents have dropped off around 1185 tonnes in household items. 684 tonnes have been reused or recycled. The Drop Off has also helped combat illegal dumping. The illegal dumping of mattresses has dropped from 200 per year to 20. The Drop Off is a financial winner as well. Kiama does not have its own landfill facility, and council has to pay to use an external site. Every tonne that doesn't go to landfill, saves ratepayers money.
