Minnamurra Public School teacher Kate Whitworth has years of experience working with children's choirs, on stages from the local school hall through to the Sydney Opera House.
Her latest program - The Flame Tree Project - combines her love of children's choirs with the Illawarra environment.
"I wanted to give our children the opportunity to work alongside Australian composers in creating original compositions that connect to where we live," she said.
"The Flame Tree Project annual program takes children from years 3-8 on that journey."
She said the 2020 choral program is inspired by 'Oola Boola Woo - The Story of Five Islands', and has been brought together with the support and collaboration of the Coomaditchie Aboriginal United Corporation in Port Kembla.
Four composers have been commissioned to produce original pieces of work for the program.
Students will come together with Kate, a composer and choreographer over two weekends in February and March at The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music, before performing their work to the community.
The Flame Tree Project 2020 auditions will run through to the end of this school term. Workshops are being held in February and March 2020.
