Have you ever thought of Kiama as a remote country town? Probably not; however, on occasions, the male residents of Kiama behave in a manner that is indicative of that found in small towns out west of the Divide.
The behaviour I'm talking about is likely to come from a male, who says with pride: "Haven't been to a doctor in years". Why not? "Don't' need to, I'm as fit as a Mallee bull!"
Daily the Men's Health Educational Rural Van (MHERV) confronts these and many more statements of "invincibility" with simple tests offering concrete evidence to the contrary.
MHERV is a Rotary project in which a full-time qualified male nurse travels NSW offering men a glimpse into their future via simple medical tests: blood pressure, body mass, blood sugar, cholesterol.
The MHERV will be in Gerringong on November 23; adjacent to the doctor's surgery in Belinda Street, Gerringong; open 9:30am to 1pm. And in Kiama on November 24, 9.30am to 2pm in the Pavilion car park in Bong Bong Street.
No appointment is necessary for either venue, and this is a Rotary Community Service project from the Rotary Clubs of Gerringong and Kiama.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
Last Thursday was a perfect evening for a Happy Hour on the upper deck of the Surf Club and there was a great turnout. Sunday was one of the few BBQs at the market where we were not combined with another organisation, fortunately the weather was cooler.
We will be making our annual donation of Christmas cakes to the Denny Foundation in Warilla, who provide Christmas hampers to families doing it tough at this time of year.
Lions all across NSW will be combining ideas as to how to help the victims of the fires. Already the Australian Lions Foundation will be making one of their disaster relief donations which gets the ball rolling and helps local organisations to get started with help where it is needed most.
Next Friday we will be at Bunnings for our BBQ and no doubt we will be collecting for the fire victims and families most affected so close to Christmas.
