Every now and then I watch reality TV but I've turned my nose up at tacky concepts before. Like, who could honestly enjoy watching a celebrity learn how to dive?
But for some reason as I sat down to watch The Masked Singer Australia with my family last night. I spent the following hour guessing, debating, googling and scrolling through Twitter trying to figure out who the masked singers were.
Even my dad, who begrudgingly watched the show, ended up guessing celebrities with the same enthusiasm as the rest of the family.
There is something surprisingly captivating about trying to guess celebrities from only their voice and vague clues littered with cliches.
Maybe it's driven by the human need to find out answers (just look at the effectiveness of cliffhangers) or just fascination of the absurd but my guess is The Masked Singer will continue to be a hit for Network 10.
I says something interesting that even host Osher Gunsberg described the show as "proudly the most ridiculous show on television".
For those unaware The Masked Singer is based on a Korean program King of the Masked Singer. The show has spread to Germany and the US, where the show is currently in its second season and has already been renewed for a third.
