Joe Mungovan's parents did just that when he was nine, and the boy from Kiama has since toured Australia and Europe.
There were some bumps in the road, but Joe took setbacks as an opportunity to grow.
At 13, he broke both femurs skateboarding down Bonaira Street. Wheelchair bound and unable to drum for four months, he taught himself to play guitar, and began writing music.
He hasn't stopped since.
"I started playing shows in school, and when I left I kept playing and touring," he said.
"You put so much love into music, it can be difficult as a career.
"The wins are really good, but when things aren't going well it gets tough because you're so invested."
He said the rewards of touring were well wort the challenges. Joe hopes to tour Europe again in 2020, but in the immediate future, a mini tour on home turf is on the cards.
Joe will play A Day on the Hill festival at Crooked River Winery in Gerringong in early September, before heading to Melbourne and Sydney.
"I just want to keep writing music, touring and creating records," he said.
"If I can keep being creative and try to improve at what I'm doing, I'm happy."
