Schools across the Kiama region held mufti days this week to raise money for Kye's family to bid on the lead truck in the i98FM Illawarra Convoy, in memory of Kye's immense generosity of spirit.

The convoy supports sick children and their families living in the Illawarra and South Coast.

His teacher, Carole Laverty, said Kye enjoyed many activities, including motorbikes, sport and fishing, but was passionate about supporting kids with disabilities.

"He would say good morning and high-five the students with autism every day, even if they didn't react or respond," she said.

"Kye would play basketball with one boy who has cerebral palsy, even if he couldn't throw the basketball back or talk to him.

"He really wanted to help anyone with a disability."

Kye's classmates thought his birthday on Thursday, August 15, was the perfect opportunity to celebrate his life.

Ms Laverty said the day was special and tough at the same time.

"There's no way to explain how difficult it has been," she said.

"The kids have done a really good job of dealing with the grief and supporting each other.

"His classmates sang happy birthday to him and had a cake. Years 6, 5, 4 and 3 all got out and formed the letters of his name, and we had a photo taken from the sky, taken by his good friend Zye.

"Two boys stood up in front of the assembly and spoke about Kye and what a good kid he was."

Ms Laverty said she had never seen the region's schools pull together the way they had this week.

Minnamurra Public School alone raised $1766 for Kye's family's bid for the lead truck in the i98FM Illawarra Convoy.
