The rock fisherman was rescued and found at about 2am on the rocks near the Little Blowhole and taken to Wollongong Hospital.
He was pronounced dead a short time later.
A Police spokeswoman said the man was not wearing a life-jacket and was unable to swim.
The man, believed to be a Chinese national, was however wearing a head torch which helped a NSW Ambulance helicopter to retrieve the man and transport him to Wollongong Hospital.
Police were told the 55-year-old man was rock fishing at Marsden Head, Kiama, with two other men, when he was washed off the rock by a wave.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District and NSW Ambulance were notified and attended.
The Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter retrieved the man from the water and conveyed him to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
