As a Rotary Club, we regularly invite community professionals to inform us about changes within their vocation. At a recent Rotary meeting Sean Kelly, a well known Kiama pharmacist, spoke to us about medication management. He explained that with age comes the need for increased medication and yet many elderly clients do not manage their medication well. Studies show people who use Webster packs are more likely to take their medication consistently and correctly.
Sean said he liaised with GPs and hospitals to ensure when a person is discharged from hospital they manage their adjusted medications well. He outlined how new drugs are very complex and the interactions with other drugs can cause issues, so "getting it right" is a crucial pharmacy service. Sean also talked about the costs of getting new drugs to market and the necessary research and trials that happen first.
He answered and discussed questions from Rotarians on the community's concerns around over-prescribing. Sean also answered questions about making cannabis legal for pain relief; how the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme reduces costs to patients; the idea of colour coding medications, as well as changes to the role of pharmacists in our community e.g. administering some vaccinations. We appreciated Sean taking the time to speak to us.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
Our Driver Reviver teams were out over the holiday weekend. The weather seemed to have put some folks from travelling, but we still were able to provide the service for those who did. We will be doing a BBQ at the markets on the 16th with a community group Kiama Physie. Following from that we will do a sausage sizzle at Bunnings on Friday the 28th.
One of the international funds that Kiama Lions support is the reduction in deaths from diabetes. Some 422 million people suffer from this disease worldwide and it is estimated that 5 million die from it each year making it the 8th leading cause of deaths in the world. Did you also know that Lions are the biggest Service Club in the world, we are the only ones with their own seat at the United Nations.
