All over the World, 33,000 Rotary Clubs are entering the "Change-Over" phase of the Rotary year; it is the time when the existing Board of each club welcomes into place the Board that will replace them for the next year. A cohort of 5-6 people have been elected by their peers to take on the responsibility of driving their club toward implementing the 2019-2020 plan.
What is topmost in the incoming Rotary Kiama Club's mind? Primarily it is increasing Rotary membership so that sufficient Rotarians exist to implement the challenging "Service Agenda" they have set for the year ahead. The new Board also faces an ongoing task of ensuring Rotary remains relevant to the community it serves; this requires a constant evaluation of the way things are done. Recent Rotary research tells Rotary: it appeals to people who want to be "hands on" in serving their community; people who want to join an organisation that is flexible, fast to act and principled.
As a network, Rotary provides members with the opportunity to reach out and participate in thousands of Rotary projects anywhere in the world; indeed, the theme for the New Year is, "Rotary Connects the World". So we wish the incoming Board every success, particularly as it moves into the new Rotary year. We also say thank you to the worldwide 1,200,000 individuals who make up the Rotary family and wish you well for a productive 2019-2020.
KIAMA LIONS CLUB
At last week's dinner meeting, the guest speaker rang in sick at the last minute, so we had to improvise by having members tell their stories. One member had been on the Norwegian cruise liner that broke down in a storm in the North Sea. He told us why the ship's engine stopped and how some folks were in the upper lounge with water around their ankles. At that moment another Lion started playing the theme tune from the Titanic on his phone which caused us all to laugh. A new member Lynn McWilliam then told us the story of his family's wine business.
At the next meeting our sole surviving member of the Outward Bound Course will tell us of his adventures. Our first dinner meeting in June will be the Changeover Dinner at which the president and old board report on the past Lions Year and the new president and board are sworn in. One of the rituals is that the outgoing president hands a silver cup known as the "Poisoned Chalice" to his successor.
