The modification request, by Dunmore Sand and Soil, to establish two additional sand extraction sites on a property at lot 209 Riverside drive is currently on public exhibition.
Member of the Friends of the Minnamurra River, Richard Maitland, is concerned about the environmental impact of the new site as it includes areas classified as an endangered ecological community under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation act.
"Sand mining is not a compatible land use," Mr Maitland said.
"It is a very environmentally sensitive area."
A total of 1,357,000 tonnes of sand is proposed to be extracted from the new sites.
The sand available at the current Boral extraction area on Tabbita road is expected to be exhausted in eight to 12 months.
As a result, Boral has submitted the modification request to meet the high demand from Sydney.
The Department of Planning and Environment has extended the submission period due to community pressure until May 30.
