Kiama's Sharon Cooper is over the moon with her ex-racehorse and now show-horse Reg.
He raced successfully under race name 'Titled' from 2001 to 2005, taking four wins, four seconds and a third for the syndicate.
Long-term coach, mentor and friend Simon Kale saw potential in Reg, and encouraged Sharon to take him on.
"Simon thought Reg would be a fantastic horse for one-day eventing and he has been," Sharon said.
"When I bought Reg, he'd been in a paddock for more than a year, fortunately one of the syndicate owners had not given up on him and wanted him re-homed.
"Simon retrained him, and everything else fell into place."
Sharon, a member of Life After Racing, is amazed at what Reg has achieved in the latter years of life.
She would recommend buying an ex-racehorse to anyone considering it.
"Make sure you get a good coach, and don't hesitate, they're a wonderful animal," Sharon said.
"The thoroughbred is just so diversified in what it can do."
People in the industry have been astounded to hear a horse of Reg's age is still showjumping successfully.
Upon qualifying for the Sydney Royal Show and the Canberra Show in working hunter classes, Sharon contacted Racing NSW to attain Reg's racing records.
"The chap on the other end of the line paused and said, 'This cannot possibly be your horse,' I said, 'What do you mean? This is my horse,' and he said, 'But it's 20.'"
In a career-first, Sharon who is in her early fifties and Reg will take to the stadium at the Sydney Royal Easter Show on Good Friday.
"Simon thinks we might be the oldest combined first-timers at the Sydney Royal," Sharon said.
"Both Reg and I are becoming a little arthritic, the early morning starts are hard, but if you're passionate you get out there and keep enjoying yourself and keep smiling."
Sharon would like to thank her family, her coach, coaching and show preparation manager Pamela Bice and groom Beth Hewitt for their support in helping her pursue her dream.
