The family-owned business was recently approved as a Creative Kids Provider by the NSW Government which means Illawarra families can now use their $100 Creative Kids Voucher for Rockshelf Academy school holiday workshops.
"We're really excited to be a Creative Kids provider," Rockshelf Academy co-founder Fran Wood said. She facilitates the workshops with her sister and early childhood teacher Viv Jennings. "The voucher makes creative activities more accessible for more families." Mrs Wood said.
The holiday program kicks off with an Easter Extravaganza workshop on April 12 during a pupil free day for Minnamurra and Gerringong public schools. "It's going to be six-hours of Easter-themed animation, activities and games," Mrs Wood said.
"Kids will create their own unique animated Easter card and Easter-themed story using a variety of supplies, a state-of-the-art tablet and stop motion animation app."
Mrs Wood said their April school holiday program also includes a Cafemation workshop, where children create and 'eat' their own three-course menu using faux food, and six of their sell-out Legomation workshops.
"These school holidays Illawarra kids will again have the opportunity to write, build and animate their own short stories using stop motion animation and Lego. It's a great way to leverage children's love of toys and technology into a creative experience that's really hands on. We also get their bodies moving with a variety of games and physical activities throughout the day," Mrs Wood said.
Tickets to one of the Legomation workshops have already sold out.
After launching in Kiama in October 2018, Rockshelf Academy expanded to Shellharbour and Nowra in January 2019, holding school holiday workshops for over 300 primary-school aged kids.
"Our vision is to empower children to be digital storytellers and artists, and enthusiastic learners," Mrs Wood said.
"It's amazing to start to see that vision to come to life, with the support of the Illawarra community. The startup journey is really challenging, we keep reminding ourselves it's a marathon and not a sprint," she said. "We sincerely hope that one day the Illawarra will be the home of a thriving national business".
Rockshelf Academy workshops are suitable for girls and boys aged 5 to 12.
