Last week I had the pleasure of welcoming to Kiama delegates to the Australian Coastal Councils Conference. This three-day annual summit is one of the most important gatherings for councils in Australia each year. My thanks to Councillor Neil Reilly and staff at The Pavilion for their work securing this Conference for Kiama. Organisers managed to assemble an impressive conference program including presentations on work being done by Kiama Council, such as the town centre study and our tourism and events strategy.

Kiama is not Robinson Crusoe in terms of working to preserve the heritage of its town, while allowing for future demands and pressures, many of which we can anticipate but not control. But we are also a coastal town that, like many others around Australia, is working to turn the pressures of large summer crowds into more manageable and economically valuable year-round visitors.
We have to balance the traditional work of preservation and planning, while also being an economic "player" in areas such as tourism. If you are interested in what was discussed at the Australian Coastal Councils Conference, you can get the program online: coastalcouncils.org.au/conference.
Last week I also sat in on the Minnamurra Boardwalk community information session. The Cardno consultants did a great job explaining their work assessing the environmental impact of a boardwalk. If you couldn’t make the session their presentation is on Council’s website: www.kiama.nsw.gov.au. You can make submissions until 15 March about the environmental impact of the boardwalk, before Council considers Cardno’s report and public submissions on March 26.
Finally, the team designing the new Gerringong Library and Museum are seeking old photos people may have of the Gerringong School of Arts Hall. The Hall will soon be the home of the Museum section of the development, and the team wants the photos to help with their designs. Your photos will also be preserved in the Library's local history collection. You can contact the Library on (02) 4233 1133.
Council is after ideas for replacing play equipment at Jubilee Park in Gerringong. If you have any suggestions please email: council@kiama.nsw.gov.au before March 22. I’m happy to report playgrounds at Hillview Circuit, Croft Place and James Muir-Miller Reserve have been completed and Reid Park in Jamberoo is next in line.
