The floods now affecting hitherto drought-stricken farming areas in Queensland have cut off many communities and Lions will be playing their part in helping. We have an organisation called "Lions Need for Feed". They have organised a group of semi-trailers loaded with feed starting in Victoria and driving north. As they pass through NSW they will be joined by others. Helicopters will then distribute foodstuffs where possible as the roads around Hughenden and Mckinlay are now impassable. Our local clubs will be contributing to the cost of the feed and transport
Here at home we had our Nominations night and the guest speakers were members of the Police Dog Handling Unit (it helps when one of your members is a retired Police Superintendent).
Don't forget to mark your diaries for the next presentation by the Kiama Matinee Theatre on March 26-28. Another comedy. a version of the 39 Steps. All proceeds will go towards the rehab costs of a local Kiama man who has become a quadraplegic due to a tragic accident. Lions will also be holding a trivia night on April 5 for the same cause.
KIAMA ROTARY CLUB
February is Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution Month for Rotary. Promoting peace is one of Rotary’s six global priorities. Conflict and violence displaced more than 68 million people in the past year, and half of those are children. Rotary refuses to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.
Through Rotary service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Rotary has partnered with the Institute for Economics and Peace, an independent think tank and leader in the study of peace and conflict, to help address the root causes of conflict and create conditions that foster peace.
The institute has identified eight factors that lead to Positive Peace:
· Low levels of corruption
· Acceptance of rights of others
· Free flow of information
· Strong business environment
· High levels of human capital
· Equitable distribution of resources
· Good relations with neighbours
· Well-functioning government
Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 professionals from around the world to receive fellowships to study at one of our peace centres. Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centres develop leaders who become catalysts for peace, conflict prevention and resolution.
In just over a decade, the Rotary Peace Centres have trained more than 1000 Fellows for careers in peace building, who are now working in over 100 countries. Many go on to careers with governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement, and international organisations like the United Nations and the World Bank or have started their own Foundations. Applications for the 2020-21 Rotary Peace Fellowship program are now being accepted. The due date for candidates to submit applications to their district is May 31, 2019.
