‘Dare to Bare’ for Cupid’s Undie Runs are held annually in 17 locations around Australia as a fun way to raise money and awareness.
In Kiama it is a 1.5km walk, run or dance to the finish line before participants celebrate their fundraising achievement at an exclusive after party.
By running in their undies they bring attention to the fact that Neurofibromatosis (NF) affects one in every 2,500 births and causes tumours to grow on any of the 100 billion nerves in the body. It can affect major organs and lead to blindness, bone abnormalities, deafness, disfigurement, learning difficulties and death.
Sufferers are subject to bullying and feeling isolated because they’re different and the undie run is a way to for all participants to celebrate that it is okay to be different.
Kiama’s Cupid’s Undie Run race director Julia Szulerowski said the community is invited to come along to Kiama Surf Life Saving Club to stand by those with NF “and celebrate that every person is perfect just the way they are”.
Mrs Szulerowski and her daughter Jessica both live with NF.
This year’s goal is to raise over $500,000 for the Children’s Tumour Foundation (CTF) so it can continue to provide critically important support for those impacted by NF and fund vital research to develop treatments and one day, find a cure.
A primary aim of CTF is to have an NF clinic in every state so all families where ever they are have access to specialist care.
“Cupid’s Undie Run is a great opportunity to have fun while raising money for CTF,” Mrs Szulerowski said.
Participants can register online to be a Cupid’s VIP and receive a limited edition pair of Calvin Klein Cupid’s undies and a Cupid’s T-shirt. The other option is for fundraisers to be a Self-Styled Cupid by wearing their own special Cupid’s outfit.
